Leroy Butts has transferred from O’Connell to Clinton Christian, making him the latest area basketball standout to transfer to the small private school in Upper Marlboro.
The junior forward’s move was finalized Monday following talks in recent weeks between Clinton Christian Coach Christian Cole and the Butts family. Cole said he initially breached the topic of Butts playing at Clinton Christian during the summer, when both were a part of the D.C. Assault AAU program.
“I was recruiting him before he decided to go back to O’Connell,” Cole said in a Tuesday phone interview. “Then his father called me about a week ago and I saw Leroy at a workout, and soon after that he decided to make the move.”
Last year, Butts averaged 10.6 points and 7.4 rebounds to earn all-WCAC first-team honors and help lead O’Connell to the WCAC title.
“I loved working with Leroy. He’s a class kid and has a bright future,” O’Connell Coach Joe Wootten said. “I wish him nothing but the best.”
In Butts, Clinton Christian adds a 6-foot-7 forward with length to control the paint as a shot blocker and a soft touch from mid-range that makes him a tough player to defend.
“Having Leroy allows us now to play a lot of our guys at their natural position since we can put him at the 4 in the post,” Cole said. “He can stretch the floor and plays well in pick-and-roll situations, and that makes us longer and more versatile as a team.”
Joining Butts, who has offers from Cincinnati, Miami, Rutgers and West Virginia, on Clinton Christian are Jon Davis (transferred from National Christian), senior Byron Hawkins (Good Counsel/Wise), Allante Holston (St. John’s), Develle Phillips (Bowie) and Asante Shivers (Wise).
