Checking in on the 2012 All-Met football teams

In honor of the release of the 2013 All-Met football teams this weekend, Recruiting Insider checked in on last year’s first-teamers and players of the year to see how they fared this fall. We didn’t include returning All-Met picks Damian Prince, M.J. Stewart, Da’Shawn Hand, Jalen Tabor, D’Andre Payne, or Ja’Whaun Bentley: you’ll have to check out the 2013 team to see how they fared in D.C.-area high school action this fall.

All-Met Offense 2012

Player of the Year: Kendall Fuller, WR

Former school: Good Counsel

Current school: Virginia Tech

The scoop: Fuller, an All-Met defensive back as a junior, won Offensive Player of the Year honors for his 44-catch, seven touchdown receiving season in Good Counsel’s 2012 WCAC championship run. He’s back on defense for the 8-4 Hokies, and emerged as one of Tech’s top defensive stoppers: Fuller led the team with six interceptions and finished fourth on the team in tackles with 56.

First Team: Antonio Harris, OL

Former school: Wise

Current school: Towson

The scoop: Harris was a crucial part of Wise’s 2012 state championship line, and is now sitting behind and learning from fellow Prince George’s County products Eric Pike and Randall Harris, who anchor the Tigers’ line in the program’s best season ever.

First Team: Na’Ty Rogers, OL

Former school: McDonough

Current school: South Carolina

The scoop: Former McDonough lineman played in one game for the 10-2 Gamecocks, who will face Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl later this month.

First Team: Moise Larose, OL

Former school: Wilde Lake

Current school: Maryland

The scoop: Larose, who didn’t allow a sack in his senior season, has played in five games and started one for the Terrapins.

First Team: Chris Durant, OL

Former school: Oakton

Current school: William & Mary

The scoop: The  6-4, 286-pound former Oakton star featured on the roster for the 7-5 Tribe.

First Team: Cam Serigne, TE

Former school: Briar Woods

Current school: Wake Forest

The scoop: Serigne caught 56 passes for 937 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior in Briar Woods’ 2012 state championship season. He sat behind Demon Deacons’ second-leading receiver, tight end Spencer Bishop, in Wake Forest’s 4-8 season.

First Team: Chris Blewitt, K

Former school: West Potomac

Current school: Pittsburgh

The scoop: After sending 45 of 48 kickoffs to the end zone and nailing eight field goals as a senior at West Potomac, Blewitt stepped in and hit 11 of 14 field goals and 37 of 38 extra point attempts for the 6-6 Panthers.

First Team: Ryan Burns, QB

Former school: Stone Bridge

Current school: Stanford

The scoop: After throwing for a school record 2,473 yards and 28 touchdowns in Stone Bridge’s 5A championship season, Burns headed to Stanford, where he watched fellow former All-Met quarterback Kevin Hogan lead the Cardinal to the Rose Bowl.

First Team: Paul Harris, WR

Former school: Douglass

Current school: Tennessee

The scoop: In his senior season, Harris caught six of his 11 touchdowns as the Eagles flew to the Maryland 2A final. He’s played five games and caught one 15-yard pass for the 5-7 Volunteers.

First Team: Taivon Jacobs, WR

Former school: Suitland

Current school:Maryland

The scoop: Originally committed to Ohio State, Jacobs was a late commitment to the Terps after a 1,065-yard, 15-yard receiving senior season. He has yet to play in a game for Maryland, where he teams in the receiving corps with brother Levern, a sophomore.

First Team: Dorian O’Daniel, RB

Former school: Good Counsel

Current school: Clemson

The scoop: O’Daniel scored 18 touchdowns for the Falcons in their 2012 championship run, and is rostered for the Tigers as a linebacker, the position at which he was an All-Met pick in 2011.

All-Met Defense 2012

Player of the Year: Jonathan Allen, DL

Former school: Stone Bridge

Current school: Alabama

The scoop: A three-time All-Met pick at Stone Bridge, Allen has played in 10 of 11 games for the Crimson Tide. Allen made 12 total tackles, 2.5 for a loss.

First Team: Oren Burks, DL

Former school: South County

Current school: Vanderbilt

The scoop: After a 123-tackle season for the Stallions as a senior, Burks moved to linebacker for his first season with the Commodores.

First Team: Donta Wilkins, DL

Former school: Potomac (Va.)

Current school: Virginia

The scoop: Repeat All-Met pick played in nine games and started four for the Cavaliers, recording 12 tackes, two for a loss, and a half sack.

First Team: E.J. Levenberry, LB

Former school: Hylton

Current school: Florida State 

The scoop: Levenberry recorded 172 tackles as a senior at Hylton, and has played in all 13 games for No. 1 Florida State this season. The two-time All-Met pick is among the top 10 tacklers for the Seminoles, and has recorded 39 total tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

First Team: Yannick Ngakoue, LB

Former school: Friendship Collegiate

Current school: Maryland

The scoop: An Under Armour all-American as a senior, Ngakoue played every game for the Terps as a freshman. He made 10 tackles, 4.5 for a loss, and had two sacks.

First Team: Marcus Newby, LB

Former school: Quince Orchard

Current school: Nebraska

The scoop: Newby became the third Maryland player to sign with the Cornhuskers since 1990 after a 132-tackle senior season for the Cougars. He didn’t feature on the depth chart as a true freshman for 8-4 Nebraska.

First Team: Trey Lee, DB

Former school: Patuxent

Current school: Stevenson

The scoop: A two-way standout for the Panthers, Lee featured prominently for the Stevenson offense, rushing for 684 yards and six touchdowns on 133 carries.

First team: Devin Butler, DB

Former school: Gonzaga

Current school: Notre Dame

The scoop: The explosive defender has played in 11 of 12 games for the Fighting Irish, recording five tackles and a pass deflection.

First team: Zach Bradshaw, KR

Former school: Damascus

Current school: Virginia

The scoop: The versatile return man played five games and started one at linebacker for the Cavaliers, tallying 10 tackles, two for a loss.

NUMBER CRUNCH: 35 

The number of offers held by Damian Prince, a 2012 All-Met pick who turned in a stellar senior season for McNamara in 2013.

– Former Stone Bridge standout and current Boston College Eagle Spenser Rositano retired from football at age 20 after suffering his sixth concussion.

– In a matchup of two of the area’s top high school basketball teams — No. 1 Paul VI and No. 2 St. John’s — one team firmly established itself as the DMV’s team to beat Thursday night. Read which team made a statement here.

–2012 All-Met Antonio Harris isn’t the only Prince George’s County product on Towson’s offensive line. DuVal product Eric Pike is helping lead the Tigers to the best season in the program’s history.

The festival will feature seven marquee matchups of Mid-Atlantic basketball powerhouses, including local showdowns of No. 3 Potomac (Md.) vs. No. 2 St. John’s and No. 1 Paul VI against No. 4 Montrose Christian.
