McNamara’s Jordan Crockett shines at Crab Bowl, earns Albany offer

December 30, 2013

At 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, McNamara‘s Jordan Crockett is used to being overlooked and underestimated at the wide receiver position. But over the course of the past two seasons, the second-team All-Met has consistently made opponents pay with his speed and big-play ability.

As one of McNamara’s WCAC rivals, DeMatha Coach Elijah Brooks and his staff were well aware of this fact while preparing to lead Crockett and the Washington team in last week’s Maryland Crab Bowl.

“The coaches knew I’m the type of player that stretches the field, so before the game started, they told us the first play would be a long pass to me,” Crockett said. “(DeMatha senior quarterback John) Lovett has a big arm and he told me to just go.”

After shaking off the cornerback’s attempt to jam him at the line of scrimmage, Crockett sprinted downfield and snagged a 76-yard touchdown pass from Lovett. Crockett would later add a 78-yard kickoff return score in the second quarter that pushed the Washington team ahead for good in a 30-21 win. Crockett, along with Bullis All-Met offensive lineman Justin Herron, received several awards given after the game.

Crockett’s explosive play is bound to bring more recruiting attention for an athlete who just received his first scholarship from Albany the week before the Crab Bowl.

Crockett earned second-team All-Met honors for the second straight season this fall after catching 55 passes for 1,213 yards and 17 touchdowns.

“I worked on my route running and getting open faster this year,” Crockett said. “I also tried to make more moves in space and be more vocal as a leader since I was a senior this year.”

Originally, Crockett enrolled at McNamara with intentions of making his mark on the basketball team. “I was always pitching myself as the next Spud Webb and Earl Boykins,” he said. But after earning first-team all-WCAC honors as a junior, Crockett realized that his greatest potential for playing college sports rested on the gridiron.

Using his electric speed and strong catching ability, Crockett can make waves on offense, defense and special teams, leading coaches to often double team him in an effort to slow him down within McNamara’s spread offense this past season. The tactic rarely paid off, however, as Crockett racked up at least 200 yards receiving and two touchdowns in three games.

Crockett plans to take an official visit to Albany in January and has earned invites to the USA vs. Canada International Bowl in February and the Big 33 Game in June.

“I was really excited about the Albany offer because they didn’t focus on my height and size but they accepted me for the talent I have,” Crockett said. “I use the doubts about my size as a motivational tool. People say I won’t go to a Division I school, but I just try to use my size to my advantage and keep working hard.”
