Quince Orchard DL Adam McLean narrows list

Like students around the area, Quince Orchard defensive tackle Adam McLean was kept out of school a couple days this week because of inclement weather, but that only added to his rigid workout regimen. He set up cones on Gaithersburg’s field Tuesday, and ran around them. He ran sprints and shuttles in the snow, and took pictures in the process.

It’s been quite the week for McLean, one of the top junior prospects in the area. He’s kept the same training schedule, but his recruiting plans have taken a turn. The 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive tackle has whittled his list of schools five: Ole Miss, Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan State and Pittsburgh. McLean said Thursday that limiting the list to five doesn’t necessarily mean he is limiting the list; he also holds offers from Maryland, Florida State and Virginia Tech.

“Those are the top five schools that are standing out the most to me right now. Those are the schools that are most consistent with me,” McLean said. “It just means for right now, those are my top five schools.”

A first team All-Met, McLean was a standout as a junior, McLean fought constant double teams but still posted a quality line: seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 47 total tackles in helping the Cougars to the Maryland 4A state quarterfinals.

McLean made waves in early January, starring in the Under Armour Game combine festivities. He stood out in drills, he said, and he took in the commitment of Friendship Collegiate cornerback Jalen Tabor. It was an important step in earning an invitation to next year’s Under Armour Game, he said, but he won’t be announcing his decision then. McLean plans to announce before his senior season, between now and July. He has taken only one unofficial visit to Nebraska, but he plans to take a visit to each of his top five schools within the next six months.

“Every day, you get one step closer,” McLean said. “I have to focus on QO football first…then make a decision when the time is right.”
