Wilson defensive end Kareem McDonald, who in November helped the Tigers make their first appearance in the Turkey Bowl since 1991, has received his first scholarship offer from Toledo.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound McDonald said he plans to visit the Rockets within the next few weeks, and considers their offer a breakthrough on his road to college football.

“I got really excited,” McDonald said. “It’s real big, because now I think all the next offers are going to come in.”

McDonald has long waited to make his splash on the recruiting front. He has attracted interest from elite schools in the past eight months, including USC, Kentucky, Nebraska and Maryland, but his first offer seemed elusive. His junior season, which he entered with high expectations, was leveled by a kidney ailment that kept him out six weeks.

He lost about 20 pounds because of the condition, but he was still one of the District’s most productive defensive lineman. McDonald recorded 30 tackles and eight sacks, and showed his athletic ability by lining up at tight end on occasion. Wilson finished 9-4 and made a historical appearance in the Turkey Bowl, where it lost to H.D. Woodson.

McDonald, who performed well in January’s Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Florida, has regained most of his weight, and his offseason workouts have consisted of relentless sessions on the track and in the weight room. His offseason has also included visits with more college coaches; he spoke with Old Dominion at Wilson last week, he said, and he expects them to offer soon. And he took a visit to Maryland, where he hopes an offer will materialize in the near future.

“I’ve been really patient. I wasn’t really thinking about it, I was just working hard,” McDonald said. “I want to commit before the season starts.”
