H.D. Woodson DB Dereon Carr commits to Toledo

H.D. Woodson senior cornerback Dereon Carr committed to play football at Toledo over the weekend, becoming the second Warriors defensive back to pledge to a Football Bowl Subdivision school this month.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Carr wasn’t being recruited by the Rockets until earlier this week. He was also weighing options at Connecticut and Virginia Union, he said.

“I knew that I could come in [at Toledo] and make an impact quick, and get on the field quick,” Carr said. “I can play a lot of the DB positions.”

It’s been a quick ascent at the position for Carr, who started his career at H.D. Woodson as a wide receiver before being moved to corner his junior year. He didn’t know how to back-pedal at that point, he said. Carr blossomed as a senior for one of the area’s best defenses, picking off four passes and posting 85 tackles for the Turkey Bowl and DCSAA champs. He had two picks in the DCSAA title game win over Friendship Collegiate, and also scored two defensive touchdowns this season.

Carr becomes the latest H.D. Woodson defensive back to commit to play college football. Classmate D’Andre Payne, a two-time All-Met, is already enrolled at Tennessee, and junior corner DuWayne Johnson pledged to Virginia  Tech two weeks ago.

Toledo, which finished 7-5 in 2013, has continually been building a pipeline to area recruits over the past several years. DuVal’s Jamal Woodland signed with the Rockets in February after pledging last May, and several area recruits have picked up their first offers from the Ohio school in the past few months, including Wilson defensive end Kareem McDonald and Quince Orchard running back Kevin Joppy.

“They feel as though there is a lot of talent in D.C., and it can help out their program,” Carr said. “They really came in and showed a lot of interest in me. I was glad to be offered a scholarship.”
