The District of Columbia State Athletic Association basketball tournament, which features an expanded field in just its second year, began Thursday night and will continue through next week’s title games at the Verizon Center.

The tournament is under the direction of DCSAA Athletic Director Clark Ray, and includes teams from the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Public Charter School Athletic Association, the Independent School League, the Interstate Athletic Conference, the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference and for the first time, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. St. John’s boys and girls teams both earned the top seeds in the field, which was released by Ray earlier this week.

In the girls bracket, DCIAA champ Bell will meet St. John’s in the quarterfinals after defeating Cesar Chavez in the first round Thursday night. Other quarterfinal matchups include Anacostia at Wilson, Ballou at Georgetown Visitation and National Cathedral at Friendship Collegiate.

In the boys bracket, Coolidge defeated McKinley Tech Thursday night to set up a quarterfinal matchup against top seed St. John’s Friday. Theodore Roosevelt will meet H.D. Woodson Friday in a rematch of the DCIAA title game, Anacostia will travel to Maret and Wilson will meet Cesar Chavez.

The semifinals will be played Sunday at American University’s Bender Arena. Those winners will advance to next week’s title games at Verizon Center, with the girls title game slated for 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.
