Old Dominion offers Wilson DL Kareem McDonald

Wilson junior Kareem McDonald has publicly vowed to establish himself as one of the city’s best defensive lineman before, but he knows his college football future lies in his ability to play linebacker of safety.

So when Old Dominion gave McDonald his latest offer on Thursday, McDonald wasn’t surprised that the Monarchs are hopeful that he can step into either the second or third level of their defense after he graduates next season.

“I was excited. ODU has been one of my top schools for a long time. I’ve been waiting for that offer,” McDonald said. ” A lot of colleges want me to play linebacker or safety in college.”

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound McDonald, who also has an offer from Toledo, is still expecting to add many more offers in the near future. McDonald has won the interest of a slew of major football powers, including Alabama, Southern Cal and Ohio State – and he noted that recruiters from Florida and Michigan will visit the school this week.

But McDonald is also high on the offers he has at the moment; he plans to visit Toledo this summer, and Old Dominion has always been one of his top schools, he said, and he will likely visit the Monarchs sometime in late May. McDonald recorded 30 tackles and eight sacks last season, helping the Tigers to their first Turkey Bowl since 1991.

McDonald is still approaching the recruiting process as if he has work to do, so he also plans on attending summer camps at Maryland, North Carolina State and Virginia.

“I’m just staying real patient. I know that [offers] are going to come,” McDonald said.

Those camps will give McDonald a chance to measure himself against the best recruits in the region, much like what he experienced Saturday at the Nike Football Training Camp in Clifton. McDonald worked through drills at linebacker and safety, he said, and he was able to show off his speed. A year ago he was running a 5.3 second 40-yard dash, but Saturday he posted a 4.79.

“The Nike camp went great. There was a lot of talent there. I just prepared myself,” McDonald said. “I learned a lot.”
