When his coach hurried up to him at a college fair to tell him the Naval Academy offered him a football scholarship, St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes junior Ish Seisay couldn’t believe it. He’d been talking to a few Football Championship Subdivision schools, but an early season injury pushed all his Football Bowl Subdivision hopes into the camp circuit this spring and summer.
So a minute or so after Saints Coach Bernard Joseph delivered the news, Seisay texted him:
“I was like, ‘Are you serious?’,” Seisay said. “No one even knows how crazy it is.”
Joseph sent Seisay’s tape to the Midshipmen coaching staff earlier in the spring, and the group liked what it saw. Quick and mobile, Seisay fit the option quarterback mold Navy wanted to fill. Though Navy’s offer was “a huge surprise” because he had never spoken to Navy, Seisay says he has since talked to the coaches and is “very interested” in the school.
Seisay threw for 1,426 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games during his sophomore season and rushed for two more touchdowns. In six games in 2013, he threw for 1,066 yards and four touchdowns, adding two more on the ground.
Prior to Navy’s offer, the 5-11 quarterback had been in touch with Towson, Liberty, and other schools that wanted him to attend camps. But after fracturing his ankle midway through the 2013 season, Seisay had all but given up on the possibility that an FBS offer might come his way before the camp circuit.
“I thought I was only going to get offers by doing great at camps, That or I’d have to wait until my senior year,” Seisay said. “My parents were so grateful when I told them, they were really happy.”
Seisay said he hadn’t considered a military academy and that he’ll see whether other schools offer before making his decision, but that Navy’s definitely drew his interest. After anticipating a pressure-filled senior year spent trying to impress coaches and earn offers, Seisay said the offer gave him “so much confidence” and incentive to work harder heading into next season.
“It makes you work even more,” Seisay said. “I went to the weight room right after school, football, everything. I mean, I’ve been doing that this whole time, but after the offer, I’ve just been doing it with a smile on my face.”
