Stonewall Jackson DL Tim Settle earns The Opening invite despite wardrobe mishap

Stonewall Jackson All-Met Tim Settle earns The Opening invite, talks recruiting (Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post).

Stonewall Jackson defensive tackle Tim Settle has long been on college coaches’ radars with a rare mix of speed and power that is rarely seen on the high school level. His skills earned him an invite to the Nike Football Training Camp (NFTC) last season, but he left without an invite to ESPN-televised The Opening combine in Beaverton, Ore.

With his eyes set on making his first trip to the Pacific Northwest, the 10th ranked player in the nation according to ESPN forgot his basketball shorts for Saturday’s NFTC at Centreville. Instead of heading home to grab a pair, he put on a pair of gray sweat shorts that he happened to have with him for the day’s camp. Settle was the only player at the camp without basketball shorts.

To make matters worse, the first-team All-Met suffered a leg injury in the early morning drills while pulling Forest Park 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive lineman Jean Luc Childs with a bungee cord attached to his waist. The injury may have been a byproduct of a lack of water on the warm afternoon, and he said it wasn’t anything to worry about long term.

And when it came time for one-on-one drills to end the day the slight injury was the last thing on his mind, and he turned his focus to earning one of the seven spots for The Opening.

“My goal was to go to The Opening,” Settle said. “[Quince Orchard's] Adam [McLean] and I fought it out for the MVP award, and I respect the decision for him to get the award. Getting to go The Opening is a once in a lifetime experience.”

Settle was especially impressive in the one-on-one sessions with opposing linemen struggling to keep the 6-foot-2, 307-pound player in front of them time and time again. See Settle below against Friendship Collegiate OL Quarvez Boulware — and his gray sweat shorts.

And Settle has yet to get into football shape because he in the midst of baseball season with the Raiders as a left fielder, third baseman and pitcher.

After his drill sessions to end the afternoon, Settle said he will have a top 13 list of colleges before two-a-days begin for the Raiders in August. He recently visited Oklahoma State and Oklahoma and said he plans to visit Georgia Tech in a couple of weeks. He also has visited Penn State with good friend Hylton DL Matt Burrell Jr.

“It was really fun, it was a great time,” Settle said of his Oklahoma State visit. “Their weight room was top notch. It had everything you needed that most colleges don’t have, and their training coach was amazing. The campus was beautiful.”

Settle has around 40 offers from the likes of Alabama, Arizona State, USC, Texas A&M, Florida State and Stanford. And he won’t make a decision until the 2015 Under Armour All-American Game in early January or National Signing Day on Feb. 4 of next year.

As the top-ranked player in the area, it can bring added pressure. Settle, though, said he hasn’t felt it.

“Its no pressure,” Settle said. “My personality is great, I‘m not the type of dude to try to show off or anything like that.”

NUMBER CRUNCH: 5

After five overtime games this season McLean’s girls’ soccer team is battle-tested and off to a better start than when the program won the school’s first girls’ soccer state title in 2011. The defense for the Highlanders (6-0-3) has shut out seven teams through nine games.
