Monday marked the watch list award release for the Bednarik Award, Paul Hornung Award and the Maxwell Award by the Maxwell Football Club. The three college football award lists featured a trio of former local standouts.
Of the 76 players who were named to the Bednarik (nation’s top defensive player) watch list, two former All-Mets were recognized — Stanford cornerback Alex Carter and Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller.
Carter, a rising junior, totaled 59 total tackles and an interception for the Pac-12 champion Cardinal. The 2011 All-Met gained over 1,000 yards of total offense and added four interceptions as a senior at Briar Woods. Carter is the sixth-best cornerback eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft according to CBSSports.com.
Fuller was named a freshman All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year after a standout true freshman campaign with the Hokies. He totaled six interceptions and 58 tackles. A two-time All-Met at Good Counsel, Fuller was the 2012 All-Met Offensive Player of the Year with 44 receptions, 695 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs was named to the Paul Hornung (nation’s most versatile player) award watch list. Although Diggs missed the Terrapins final five games last season he earned honorable mention All-ACC honors. Diggs was a 2010 All-Met at at Good Counsel after he totaled 15 receiving touchdowns.
Diggs was also named to the Maxwell Award (nation’s top player) watch list. Find the full lists here.
