Hylton junior Matt Burrell, Jr., a four-star recruit with over 40 offers, talks recruiting and visits

Hylton offense linemen Matt Burrell Jr. has spent his summer getting acclimated with college campuses. He has made stops to Ohio State, Penn State and Florida State and is heading to Florida on Thursday to meet Will Muschamp and the coaching staff.

He has had nothing but great reviews of each campus, but with more than 40 offers he has yet to trim his list to a final 10. He was set to announce his top 10 schools, on Twitter, Tuesday but decided he wasn’t ready just yet. He said he wants to sit down with his parents more before cutting down on his list of offers.

“I’ll probably wait another month or two before announcing my top 10,” Burrell said. “After this trip I’m going to stay off Twitter, and get ready for the season.”

It was reported that he committed, but Burrell confirmed that he’s still going through the process. His father, also Matt, said the amount of attention hasn’t deterred his focus from academics and football.

“People can say what they want, but he is hyper-focused on his senior year,” Matt Sr. said. “We laugh at some of the chatter. We enjoy every aspect of it, and we’re focused on him and watching his journey.”

Burrell has climbed to No. 43 in ESPN’s ranking of the top 300 rising seniors in the nation with great size at 6 feet 4, 300 pounds. His most recent unofficial visit was to Florida State last week for the first time.

“It was awesome, I loved it and it was good to place names with faces and sit down with the coaches,” Burrell said. “I like their offensive line coach [Rick Trickett]. He’s produced great players every year. They have a wonderful tradition, and it’s a great college town.”

After the Florida visit, he’s not sure where he will be headed next, but the conversation will be had with his parents soon on cutting his list. Burrell can still take official visits to all the aforementioned schools before committing, and he said he’s not marking National Signing Day (Feb. 4) as the official day he will decide.

“When I feel like I’m ready I will know, and make that decision when that time comes,” Burrell said.
