Andrea Mitchell has breast cancer. The veteran journalist, 64, made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at the end of her MSNBC show.
“I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week,” Mitchell told viewers, “but instead discovered that I am now among the one in eight women in this country — incredibly, one in eight — who have had breast cancer.”
The disease was discovered in the earliest stages during a routine annual screening and has not spread. Mitchell did not say what treatment she sought (a MSNBC rep confirmed that she had surgery) but said she has a “terrific prognosis.”
Mitchell used the news to to urge women to get screened, then thanked her husband, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, doctors and collegues. “I am incredibly grateful.”
