Carla Bruni-Sarkozy: What’s next for supermodel-turned-first lady? Back to music career

The decisive reelection loss of French President Nicolas Sarkozy has many wondering what lies ahead for a Europe divided on how to grapple with its current debt crisis — which, we suppose, is one way of looking at things.

But you do realize, of course, this also means that Carla Bruni-Sarkozy will no longer be a first lady?

What a run she had. In an era crowded with VIP hyphenates (actors-turned-singer, models-turned-actress, actors-turned-governor), Bruni had more hyphens than anyone else, while keeping au courant with every celebrity trend of our times: Baby bump? Check. Celebvocacy? A natural. First lady fashion showdowns? Mais oui!

It was as improbable and as delicious as a soap opera storyline. Just a month after his second divorce — and only six months after he was elected president — Sarkozy met the Italian supermodel-turned-pop singer (whose ex-boyfriends included Mick Jagger) in November 2007. They were photographed canoodling on the Nile and at Disneyland Paris. In February 2008, they wed.

For a brief moment, it looked as though the world-class beauty might retire into her new role. She dowdied up her wardrobe just ever so slightly, started wearing flat shoes to better accompany her not-tall husband.

But the swaggering charisma that makes someone a supermodel-turned-pop singer just kept shining through. The new first lady of France posed regally on the cover of Vanity Fair and gave a candid, saucy interview. (“I never realized how many nude pictures I did before I met Nicolas.”)

And then? The first lady of France released a new album! (Sample lyric: I am burning for you like a pagan woman.)

And then? The first lady of France took a movie role in Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris”!

And then? She had a baby!

And then? Well, she’s been lying low since the birth of Giulia in October — much like any new mother might, and perhaps our first signal that Carla Bruni-Sarkozy might actually be mortal. But while Sarkozy’s future remains unclear — will he cash in as a high-flying international business lawyer, or plot a political comeback? — Carla has a plan: She’s going back to music.

“Carla did not put her career on hold” while serving as first lady, her rep told the U.K. Telegraph, but continued to write music. “What she gave up for practical reasons was her public concerts, which she is now able to start again.” She hopes to release her new album by Christmas.
