David Axelrod makes new mustache bet — will shave if he raises $1 million for epilepsy research

For nearly a week, the eyes of a nation were fixed upon David Axelrod’s upper lip: He vowed to shave his mustache if President Obama lost Michigan, Minnesota or Pennsylvania.

It didn’t happen — but with his glorious pushbroom commanding attention, the senior campaign strategist upped the ante. Returning Thursday to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” where he made the original bet, Axelrod said he will shave it off if he can raise $1 million for Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy. Which would be revelatory for Susan Axelrod, his wife of 33 years. The co-founder of CURE (their oldest child has epilepsy) met Axe in college and has never seen him without a mustache. “As far as I am concerned,” she told us, “he must have been born with the thing.”
