He must have really liked her: The “La Peregrina” necklace that Burton bought Taylor in 1969 — for a mere $37,000 — and which just sold for $11.8 million. (Richard Drew/AP)
Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry sold for $115 million at a Christie’s auction in New York Tuesday night that broke records and exceeded expectations all the way around. The pearl-diamond-and-ruby necklace Richard Burton gave her in 1969? Sold for $11,842,500, reports AP, about five times more than expected. A 33-carat diamond ring from her two-time husband fetched $8.8 million from a South Korean hotel chain that plans to put it on display, reports Reuters. The late screen legend’s art, clothing and other memorabilia will be auctioned in coming weeks. Some of the proceeds will go to her AIDS charity.
