Historic McLean home of late millionaire Joe Robert goes on the market

Another historic estate is on the market: The McLean home of Joe Robert.

The real-estate investor, who died in December, scooped up a classic property for himself almost 20 years ago: A 1925 stone house on six acres in the heart of McLean. Despite his high profile (Robert founded “Fight Night” and raised millions for local charities), he was intensely private about his home — no Gatsby-esque parties on the rolling lawn, just small dinners for friends.

The gated estate, just listed for $11.5 million, is one of the most expensive ever offered in McLean. (Bobby and Ethel Kennedy’s Hickory Hill, a monument to deferred maintenance on five acres — finally sold for $8 million in 2010.) Known as Ballantrae Farm, the Robert house sits on farmland that was subdivided into tiny lots with McMansions in the mid-1980s. The heart of it — Robert’s estate — was preserved with the grand manor and grounds. Finding that much land that close to D.C. is “highly unusual,” said listing agent Mark McFadden.

The Colonial Revival house boasts five bedrooms, six baths and what looks like a Tudor great room. Also on the grounds: the restored original farmhouse, dating to the 19th-century, and a guesthouse.

But the rolling grounds are the big draw: Stone patios, swimming pool, a rare stacked stone tennis court, koi pond and a side lawn large enough for a soccer field.

No open house, alas. The property is being shown by appointment only.

Also for sale: Robert’s ski estate in Beaver Creek, Colo., listed for $13 million-plus.
