• Gérard Depardieu is being blasted by French pols and pundits as a tax exile after establishing residency in a modest new home just a stone’s throw over the border in the Belgian village of Nechin. The bon vivant actor, one of the biggest French movie stars of his generation, did not respond to reporters, but his move came amid a proposal by President François Hollande to tax all incomes above $1 million euros at 75 percent, reports AFP. Nechin Mayor Daniel Senesael, meanwhile, is defending his village from critics who say taxes are the only reason anyone would move there. Depardieu, he told reporters, “wanted to enjoy the atmosphere. . . the rural, bucolic setting.”

• PepsiCo will spend $50 million on a campaign that will promote its pitchwoman, Beyoncé, alongside its sugary beverages, the New York Times reports. The company will not only pay the singer to appear in its ads but also will underwrite her creative projects — and slap her face on soda cans next year.
