• John Galliano was convicted in Paris Thursday on charges stemming from the drunken outburst that got him fired from Dior. A French court found the designer guilty of “public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity” for showering fellow bar patrons with racist and anti-Semitic rants in February, reports the AP. Magistrates fined him more than $20,000, they suspended his prison time, noting that he’d apologized. Galliano, testifying in June, blamed it all on his addition to booze, barbituates and sleeping pills.
• Mos Def is changing his name to Yasiin, effective the end of the year. The actor/rapper (born Dante Smith) told MTV2 that his old name is “a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture. . . and it’s time to expand and move on.”
