In other news: John Galliano convicted, spared jail time; Mos Def changes name

John Galliano was convicted in Paris Thursday on charges stemming from the drunken outburst that got him fired from Dior. A French court found the designer guilty of “public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity” for showering fellow bar patrons with racist and anti-Semitic rants in February, reports the AP. Magistrates fined him more than $20,000, they suspended his prison time, noting that he’d apologized. Galliano, testifying in June, blamed it all on his addition to booze, barbituates and sleeping pills.

Mos Def is changing his name to Yasiin, effective the end of the year. The actor/rapper (born Dante Smith) told MTV2 that his old name is “a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture. . . and it’s time to expand and move on.”
