• America, meet your newest global cultural ambassador — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The State Department announced Wednesday that the NBA legend, who in retirement has focused on social and economic justice, will travel the world on our behalf. First stop next week: Brazil, where he will lead basketball clinics and talk about empowerment and tolerance with disadvantaged kids. (see video...)

• Like so many other political VIPs before her, Jill Biden is writing a children’s book. “Don’t Forget, Nana, God Bless Our Troops” will be told through the eyes of Biden granddaughter Natalie, during the year her father Beau was deployed to Iraq, announced Simon & Schuster. Under the deal brokered by superlawyer Bob Barnett, proceeds will go to charities for military families.
