Mark Kelly is retiring from NASA and the Navy to help wife Gabrielle Giffords in her recovery — and to collaborate with her on a memoir. Scribner announced Tuesday that the congresswoman and the astronaut will tell the story of their life before and since her January wounding in a Tucson shooting rampage. Author Jeffrey Zaslow will assist; the contract was negotiated by D.C. superlawyer Bob Barnett. (The AP notes that as a member of Congress, Giffords can receive no advance.) Kelly, who returned to Earth June 1 after captaining the final Endeavour flight, also announced his retirement Tuesday, adding he’s “hopeful that one day I will again serve our country.”

Tracy Morgan returned to Nashville Tuesday to apologize publicly for a June 3 stand-up gig in which he joked he’d “stab” his son if he were gay. The comic joined officials with GLADD and the local gay man who first broadcast concerns about the rant. “I hurt people with this,” said Morgan, stonefaced, reports the Tennessean. “I don’t see gay or straight, I just see human beings now.” See video. . .
