In other news: Maryland wins talent prize at Miss America; Nana Meriwether is new Miss USA

• Hang onto your tiaras: It could be a big night for local women at the Miss America pageant Saturday in Las Vegas. Miss Maryland Joanna Guy won a key preliminary, taking top talen honors Wednesday night by singing the ubiquitous “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Mis.” The Cornell undergrad from Swanton, Md., was also one of seven contestants singled out for her do-gooder work. There’s also good buzz from pageant pundits about Miss Virginia Rosemary Willis, a William & Mary junior from Chesapeake. Meanwhile, Miss D.C. Allyn Rose — whose plans to get a double mastectomy to avoid an inherited breast cancer risk made national news — overcame a perilously slippery stage to nail her roller-skating dance routine. “At one point in rehearsal, I thought she was going to slide right under the piano,” Teri Galvez, the D.C. pageant director told us. “But she worked some things out.”

• News from the other pageant: Nana Meriwether, the Sidwell Friends grad who came in second at Miss USA in June, took over as the new Miss USA in a ceremony with pageant boss Donald Trump Wednesday. Original winner Olivia Culpo had to hand over the tiara for the final months of her reign after winning Miss Universe last month.
