• Broadway’s critically-drubbed “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has pushed back the official opening for the sixth time, which eliminates the $65 million musical’s chances for any Tony awards this year. (Ahem. As if.) Late Wednesday, producers released a statement confirming that creator/director Julie Taymor is leaving her day-to-day role overseeing the production because of “previous commitments” that prevent her from working “the 24/7 necessary” to perfect it for opening.

• Mel Gibson will plead no contest Friday in his domestic violence case. Gibson is making the deal to avoid a public trial with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva; he’s expected to get counseling but no jail time. Gibson’s lawyer released a statement saying that his client’s right to due process “can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached. . . It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the District Attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end.”
