•Tom Cruise filed a $50 million defamation suit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles Wednesday against the publishers of Life & Style and In Touch magazines for falsely claiming he’s “abandoned” his six-year-old daughter, Suri.
“Tom doesn’t go around suing people,” his lawyer Bert Fields said in a statement. “But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.” Representatives for the magazines had no comment.
Cruise has won lawsuits against a British tabloid that wrote his marriage to Nicole Kidman was a sham and against actor Chad Slater for false allegations about the star’s sexuality. Cruise is asking for a jury trial; Fields said he would likely donate any money from a judgment in his favor to charity.
• Dinesh D’Souza, already in hot water over his personal life, is facing multiple lawsuits over his anti-Obama movie “2016,” reports San Diego’s North County Times. One lawsuit alleges the conservative author attempted to steal the production company from two partners; another claims he illegally failed to share profits from his bestselling book based on the hit documentary.
