Engaged: Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, 52, and María Belén Chapur, the 40-something Argentine woman for whom he sacrificed his political future. Sanford proposed last week in a Buenos Aires restaurant, the newspaper Clarin reported; he told CNN Sunday he’s “both happy and excited. . . she’s a wonderful person.” It’s been three years since Sanford — once considered a 2012 GOP presidential hopeful — abruptly vanished for a few days, telling staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was actually visiting his “soul mate,” as he later described her to reporters. Jenny Sanford, his wife of 20 years, filed for divorce later that year.
