Just weeks after wrapping up an incredible division-clinching season, a new one has already begun for the Washington Nationals: wedding season!
On Saturday, fan favorite Michael Morse wed Jessica Etably in South Florida — becoming the first of at least seven Nats couples expected to walk down the aisle during this offseason. In December, it will be Ross Detwiler, followed by Corey Brown and Jordan Zimmermann; in January, it’s Ryan Zimmerman’s and Edwin Jackson’s turns. Unclear exactly when Craig Stammen is tying the knot, but we’d bet it’s before spring training begins in February.
Hey, pretty smart that no one scheduled a wedding for October this year, huh?
“I don’t think anyone does that, for the most part,” said Erika Zanders. “You just never know.”
Zanders, 31, the fiancee of pitcher Jackson, 29, told us it was “a little stressful at times” planning nuptials during what turned into a breakthrough season for the eight-year-old team. Their home base is in Georgia, and their January wedding will be in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (They wanted a warm destination that their grandmothers wouldn’t have to travel overseas for.) They’ve both spent so much time in Washington, but fortunately, she said, “the Nats played the Marlins three times, so I did some planning then.”
The couple, who have a 1-year-old son, have known each other for nine years. Any insight into the sudden wedding epidemic? “All those guys are all around the same age, when people start settling down,” she said. “But it’s just a coincidence.”
Ryan Zimmerman told our colleague Sarah Kogod earlier this fall that the young team was dominated by guys who have been in the big leagues just long enough to feel stable in their lives — while Morse joked about a “domino effect” and the pressure that comes from all their girlfriends’ being friends with one another.
The happy young marrieds did not respond to our requests for comment this weekend, though Morse tweeted a cozy photo of himself and his bride at 3 a.m. Guests seem to have included Davey Johnson, Zimmerman and former teammates Collin Ballester and Ivan Rodriguez, according to other social-media clues. And at some point this weekend, according to another photo tweeted by a friend, Morse gamely donned a custom-made white jacket. Emblazoned on the back: “Officially Taken.”
