The first couple didn’t travel far to celebrate Michelle Obama’s 48th birthday Tuesday night: Just around the block to BLT Steak at 16th and I streets. They dined in a private room, joined by several friends including Valerie Jarrett and Eric Holder. After a trip to the men’s room midway through dinner, the president took a slow walk back through the main dining room, shaking hands and greeting fellow diners. During the long meal, they apparently missed all the excitement back at the White House, where a smoke bomb was thrown over the fence onto the north lawn during an Occupy protest on Pennsylvania Avenue.
