Washington, don’t be troubled that your Miss Gay D.C. Kirby Kolby actually lives in Raleigh, N.C. Border-hopping is an accepted practice in the pageant world, and we’re lucky he brought his talents here: With his crowning last month in Columbus, Ohio, as Miss Gay America, Kolby (born: Mark Smith) became the third D.C. contestant in four years to win the national title.
The professional drag queen, 41, had a homecoming of sorts Saturday at Ziegfield’s in Southwest, lip-synching Rihanna and Whitney songs. He had competed at Miss Gay America five times in his 20s, but “I figured it wasn’t ever going to happen for me so I took an 11-year break.” How’d he win it this time? “I had a whole different outlook,” he told us. “It wasn’t just for me. It was an opportunity to go around the country and inspire other people.”
