Quoted: Bob Schieffer needs David Axelrod to explain ‘Gantry-esque’

“What did you just say?”

Bob Schieffer to David Axelrod on Sunday morning’s “Face the Nation.” Obama’s senior campaign adviser went all AP English on us while explaining the president’s subdued response to Mitt Romney in the debate last week: “He went thinking this was going to be a discussion about this country’s future, and he was confronted with this kind of Gantry-esque performance on the other side.” Gantry-esque? Schieffer pushed and got clarification — this was a reference to Sinclair Lewis’s 1927 satirical novel “Elmer Gantry,” about a sleazy, slick-talking evangelist.
