Jimmy Kimmel has signed on to entertain at the 2012 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner — “a dense, practically liquid mass of chattering journalists, politicos, and Hollywood celebrities, seething to and fro,” writes Lisa de Moraes. Er, congratulations, Jimmy? “The air is thick with the mixed scent of perfume, mildew, and mothballed evening gowns and tuxedos,” she warns. But she also argues that Kimmel — ascendant in the ratings and an old hand at awards-show hosting — may be better at handling an unruly room than, say, Craig Ferguson, whose Scottish burr kind of got lost in the roar of the crowd at the ’08 dinner. The dinner will be April 28, so you now have six months to try to get the absolutely unobtainable tickets to the event that Lisa may well have just talked you out of anyway. Oh, and the president speaks, too.
