Read this: Neera Tanden’s mom; Herman Cain’s D.C. days; Justin Bieber’s denial; Kanye’s kilt

Neera Tanden (Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post)
Behind every D.C. power player was a power mother. Neera Tanden, now the new president of Center for American Progress, was a Yale Law grad rising rapidly through the ranks of the Clinton White House when her mom met the first lady, reports Jason Horowitz. “Clinton asked Tanden’s mother if she was proud of her daughter’s accomplishments. ‘A lot of her friends are partners at law firms and make a lot more money,’ Tanden recalled her mother saying. For months afterward, Clinton asked if she was financially okay.” Oh, mom!!!

In other news: Herman Cain’s stint as a Beltway insider... E! grapples with Kardashian backlash. . . South Korean officials dismayed by some White House protocol during President Lee’s visit . . Justin Bieber denies paternity claims on “Today,” misses the opportunity for a killer “Billie Jean” cover.

(Kyle Gustafson for The Washington Post)

“Kanye West . . . sporting a black leather kilt, looking like the coolest man on earth.”

— Chris Richards on the Jay-Z and Kanye West concert you should not have missed.
