Read this: Tug Coker, hoops hopeful turned Broadway star, plays boyhood idol Larry Bird

Tug Coker of "Magic/Bird" (Joan Marcus)
Tug Coker always wanted to be Larry Bird — and now he is, just not in the way he expected. When the high school hoops star from Northern Virginia washed out quickly as a college player, he gravitated to theater. Now he’s starring as Larry Bird in Broadway’s “Magic/Bird.” Coker is four inches shorter and, face it, much more handsome than Bird, we learn in a fascinating profile by our colleague Preston Williams. (More here on his high school and college playing career.) Biggest challenge: Having to sink baskets onstage while his boyhood hero watches from the audience.

Virginia’s Tug Coker finally gets to wear a Celtics uniform — in ‘Magic/Bird’ on Broadway, 4/22/12
