Looks like the flap about Paul Ryan’s marathon time has. . . well, legs. The GOP’s No. 2 shocked runners from both parties last month when he boasted his personal best marathon time was “under three, high twos. I had a two hour and 50-something.” Amazing — but not true. Sarah Palin holds the Republican Veep-Hopeful record: 3 hours, 59 minutes in a 2005 marathon.
Runner’s World reports that Ryan’s only marathon was in 1990, when the then-20-year-old finished in 4 hours, 1 minute and 25 seconds. His verbal misstep outraged serious runners, for whom race times are sacred — and Ryan further annoyed them with a lighthearted retraction this weekend.
Other notable pol times, according to the magazine: John Edwards ran a 3:30, George W. Bush a 3:44 and Al Gore a 4:58.
