Singer Jewel’s impromptu banter wasn’t a hit with some audience members at Tuesday’s GW concert. After she flubbed the beginning of a song, the mom of a toddler explained that she was really tired and called herself “retarded.” She stopped, then dug in deeper by acknowledging the term wasn’t socially acceptable and called herself mentally challenged instead. Still not cool which some fans, who complained to the school afterward. The singer apologized Wednesday, telling us she is “intimately aware of the challenges for those who either face, or have loved ones who face disabilities of any kind. . . I hope that an unintended comment won’t discredit all the positive work I have done, but most importantly I hope nobody’s feelings were hurt as that was never my intention.”
