‘Veep,’ meet VP: Joe Biden lunches with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

April 12, 2013

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was in town to promote the new season of “Veep,” so it was only natural she would stop by to have lunch with the real thing.

The star contributed a brief jolly interview to the real VP’s “Being Biden” audio series. (“Two vice presidents, hard at work in the West Wing,” she explained. “I surprised him by sitting at his desk.”)

But you know, it wasn’t the first time they’d met. Oh no. They go way back. In 2008, Biden managed to dunk Louis-Dreyfus during her turn in some kind of Charity Celebrity Dunking Machine on “Ellen.” No, we didn’t dream this, it really happened — see the video.

Louis-Dreyfus didn’t specifically invoke Biden when she talked to our colleague Hank Stuever about her role as “Veep’s” Selina Meyer but said her experience in Hollywood made it easy to relate to a frustrated second fiddle.

“I understand her desire to succeed. Which is fundamentally what’s going on here. She is thwarted. And I love to be able to play someone whose ego and narcissism are allowed to bloom fully, in an environment where that is allowed to be — until it isn’t and then it is utterly shut down. I mean, I get it.”

Oh, and Biden wasn’t her only reunion in D.C. this week. At a premiere reception at the Motion Picture Association of America, she caught up with fellow “Saturday Night Live” veteran, now Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.)
