Laura Jane Grace, formerly known as Tom Gabel, in a Cosmopolitan essay about transitioning from a man to a woman last year while performing as lead singer of punk-rock band Against Me! Grace writes about that crucial milestone: First concert in a skirt. “It was black and leather and fit me great. I was worried about playing in it, unsure if it would affect the way I moved. . . but it didn’t matter. I was breaking new ground.”
