Yes, Maria Belen Chapur was at Mark Sanford’s victory party Tuesday night in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
The Argentinian journalist at the center of the extramarital scandal that nearly toppled him from the governor’s mansion four years ago made a brief appearance to celebrate his win in a special election for Congress. The Associated Press reports that Chapur — now Sanford’s fiancée — left after his victory speech, so there was apparently only time to catch a couple of quick photos of her and nothing of them together (unlike the photos from his primary election party).
Other than thanking Chapur and his eldest son for their help, Sanford addressed the scandal obliquely in his speech. “Some guy came up to me the other day, and he said, ‘You look a lot like Lazarus,’ ” Sanford said, reports our colleague Karen Tumulty. “I am an imperfect man, saved by God’s grace, and one who has a conviction of the importance of doing something about spending in Washington, D.C.”
Chapur still lives in Argentina. Unclear what the plans are for joining her fiance in Washington and/or his district.
