Canada beauty pageant scandal as wrong woman is crowned

May 29, 2013

Ah, the humanity! Everyone’s worse beauty pageant nightmare came to life in Toronto this week when Miss Universe Canada judges erroneously awarded the crown to the wrong finalist — and then took it away a day later, citing a scoring typo. “My heart sank,” Denise Garrido told the Toronto Star, but “I will always have the memory of being the 24-hour queen.” Instead, Riza Santos will represent Canada in the Miss Universe contest in December. Our neighbors to the north are outpacing the U.S. for pageant scandal these days: Last year a transgendered contestant rocked the tiara world with her battle to be allowed to compete in the same pageant.
