Brief news from here and elsewhere:

The death of fast-rising young reporter Michael Hastings, 33, in an L.A. car accident has shaken the journalism world. The L.A. Times reports that his car struck a tree in a residential area of Los Angeles and burst into flames early Tuesday. Our colleague Max Fisher has a nice memorial of the reporter, launched to fame with the Rolling Stone story that ended Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s career. (AP, LA Times, World Views)

Jack Lew’s autograph is measurably less terrible than it used to be. On the just-unveiled $5 bill, “at least one letter, and perhaps two is legible” in the Treasury secretary’s signature. (Washington Post Business)

Serena Williams, holding forth on the infamous Steubenville rape case, insists she’s “not blaming the girl” and yet just kept digging herself a deeper hole. (The Early Lead)
