Our nation’s leading purveyor of arena-pleasing singalong pop anthems is turning his songwriting talents towards Boston — but he’ll debut it in Washington.
Neil Diamond — whose “Sweet Caroline” became an unlikely touchstone in the wake of the marathon bombing — has written a new tune to benefit the Boston One Fund and the Wounded Warriors Project. “Freedom Song (They’ll Never Take Us Down)” will be released via iTunes and Amazon on Tuesday. But he’ll sing it for the first time in D.C. on July 4, at a Nationals-Brewers game and at the PBS “A Capitol Fourth” concert, broadcast live from the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
“I was moved by the unity and the attitude of the people in Boston,” Diamond told AP. “And that’s really all a songwriter needs, is to be inspired. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does you have to follow that muse and I did.”
