Sen. Mike Enzi utters saddest quote in politics

“I thought we were friends.”

– Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) when asked by reporters about his relationship with Liz Cheney, after she announced she would challenge him in the 2014 Senate primary. Is this the most poignant quote in politics? Or the most naive? (Go ahead and make your references to Harry Truman, who probably didn’t actually utter the famous line about how if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.) Pressed as to whether they are officially no longer friends, Enzi responded: “Well, I don’t have any reason not to. She hasn’t said anything she’s going to do or said anything bad about me yet.” Yet!
