Maria Belen Chapur is finally talking about her relationship with Rep. Mark Sanford. In an interview Friday with an Argentinian web site, the journalist nervously shared a few tidbits about her life with the former South Carolina governor.

The two met in Uruguay in 2001, exchanging friendly Christmas cards until their romance began seven years later, reports the State.  They are now engaged — she was at Sanford’s side at his victory party earlier this year —but she spends about half her time in Buenos Aires. Sanford used to visit but “it’s more complicated for him” since his election, she said.

“When we’re together, we live together,” she said. “We’re itinerant, partly in Washington, partly in Charleston.” Chapur said she has met Sanford’s four children but has not spent much time with them, and she’s still figuring life with an American politician: “I can’t tell you much yet. What I can tell you is that he works a lot and deeply loves his country.”
