The USO Gala’s famous faces — some more famous than others

The 2013 USO annual gala honored military heroes Friday night by bringing in some famous faces — some more recognizable than others. “This next song is a hit, for those of you who don’t know how famous I am,” teased Wynonna Judd, who got caught the eye of Gen. Martin Dempsey by stashing her harmonica in her cleavage. (“I kept watching the harmonica disappear,” he joked to the crowd.) Another memorable face: Dennis Haysbert, best-known as President David Palmer on “24” and the Allstate insurance spokesman. “I’m here helping the troops get a little touch of home,” said Haysbert, who’s worked with the USO since 2005. “I know what it means to them to see celebrities come out and see them.”

Also on hand at the Washington Hilton, our colleague Michael Livingston II reports, were such bestselling mystery authors as Kathleen Antrim and Harlan Coben, who just began “Operation Thriller IV”, a USO tour to Europe and the Middle East. “Our troops do so much for us, and their sacrifice is amazing to me. I wanted to do what I could to say thank you,” said Antrim, a two time USO tourist. “I make up heroes [in my stories], but here I get to meet the heroes,” Coben said. “These are my celebrities.”
