Before “The Book Thief” had its premiere Thursday night in D.C., former president George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush hosted a screening of the new Holocaust film for about 300 people Wednesday in Houston. Guests included sons, Marvin and Neil, along with former Houston mayor Bill White. Bush gave two thumbs up; the former first lady particuarly liked it because “one of the key plot lines involved a caring adult teaching a precious child to read.” The film, based on the novel about a young girl sent to live with a foster family in Germany during World War II, had its Washington screening at the Holocaust Museum, with the film’s stars Geoffrey Rush, Sophie Nelisse and Markus Zusak.
