No  drama in D.C. court Monday: A judge gave Chris Brown a new court date of Jan. 8. The singer was originally scheduled to be at a Monday hearing for his misdemeanor assault charge — you remember that October altercation in front of the W Hotel? — but he was allowed to skip the court appearance, report our colleagues Keith L. Alexander and Dana Hedgpeth.

After getting kicked out of one rehab center for violent behavior, Brown checked into another last week when a California court ordered him to spend 90 days working on his anger-management issues. Brown’s lawyers asked if he could miss the D.C. hearing and remain in California: “It would be counter-productive to have Mr. Brown check-out of an inpatient treatment program and travel across the country to attend a status hearing that will likely result in a continuance,” they wrote in their filing. They also said prosecutors didn’t give them documents until last week, which didn’t give the defense enough time to prepare for Monday’s hearing.

Although the January date still falls within the mandated 90 days of anger-management treatment, Brown will be required to appear at that hearing per the judge’s order an order by the judge. However, Brown’s attorneys could petition for another waiver that would allow the hearing to be held without the singer present.
