MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry welcomes a new daughter

Flowers. Candy. Who cares? This Valentine’s Day, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry got a lifelong gift that takes “Be Mine” to a new level. She and her husband, James Perry, welcomed a baby girl via gestational carrier on Friday.

The self-professed nerd and host of her own eponymous opinion show has dubbed her new bundle of joy “baby nerd,” tweeting Monday that she was “bleary eyed with exhaustion” and “overwhelmed by love.” And baby makes four for the Perry family with 12-year-old Parker, Harris-Perry’s daughter from a previous marriage, stepping into the role of big sister.

In January, Harris-Perry offered Mitt Romney a tearful public apology after poking fun at a family photo featuring his adopted grandson, Kiernan, who is black. “On this program we are dedicated to advocating for a wide diversity of families,” said Harris-Perry.  “It is one of our core principals.”
