Perhaps there really is nothing new under the sun. For proof of that maxim, one might turn to some of the jokes at Saturday night’s Gridiron dinner. A couple of lines uttered by some of the white-tie-clad speakers at the exclusive event seemed a bit familiar to us… because similar gags had been used by other formally dressed political folk.

Saturday night’s line:

“White tie and tails – or as we call it at our house, workout gear,” Secretary of State John Kerry joked, referring to the Gridiron’s extra-fancy dress code. “Or as we call it at our other house, pajamas. … Or as we call it at our other house, swimming costumes.”

Reminded us of:

“It’s nice to finally relax and wear what Ann and I wear around the house,” Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, at the 2012 Alfred E. Smith dinner , which is also a white-tie event.

Saturday night’s line:

“I know what you’re thinking –’why Charlie Crist?’ Simple: The Gridiron wanted someone of color,” explained always-bronzed Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.

Reminded us of:

“We have a lot in common,” President Obama said of another tanned pol, House Majority Leader John Boehner, at the (black tie) 2009 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “He is a person of color. Although not a color that appears in the natural  world.”
