Drats! You just missed your chance to buy a piece of history — and at discount, no less. In one of the biggest residential real estate sales in the D.C. area in more than two years, Tysons Corner tycoon Gerald “Jerry” Halpin recently sold his “River View Estate” for $18.6 million, about $6.4 million less than the original asking price.

The Fairfax County property, originally part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, sits on 16.5 acres of Potomac River front, features a 6,000-square foot main house with six bedrooms, and a 2,000-square foot guest house for the guest who needs the equivalent of two (okay four) D.C.-sized apartments to feel comfortable. According to Martha Holland, vice president of marketing at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty which handled the sale, the property “will not be developed as far as we know” and will remain a private residence. Sotheby’s is staying hush-hush on the boldfacer who signed on the dotted line, but we’re guessing it’s someone with cash to spare.
