A lucky few have stayed at hotels so homey they’d love to move right in. But actually put a down payment on the place? Hardly. That is unless you’re actor Woody Harrelson, who along with Baltimore businessman John Dwyer, recently bought the Inn at the Black Olive for $4.5 million. But before whispers of “vanity project” abound, let us quell your cynicism. The “Hunger Games” star and the boutique hotel have a history.

“He’s a wonderful friend,” said the inn’s former owner Dimitris Spiliadis. “Woody Harrelson is not just the Woody Harrelson that everyone knows. Behind the scenes he’s even better.”

In 2011 while filming HBO’s “Game Change” in Baltimore, Harrelson stayed at the newly opened Inn at Black Olive and became fast friends with then-owner Spiliadis, whose parents own the Black Olive restaurant two blocks away from the hotel. After a rocky start, which included construction delays paired with a tough economy, the inn filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2013.

Now that he can see it, Spiliadis, who will stay on as the general manager of the hotel, has lofty goals for his eco-hotel’s future. “We want to be the Inn at Little Washington of Baltimore.” He also expects Harrelson to stop in for a night or seven. “When he’s around I hope that he feels that he has a home.”
