A tent-ful of people who talk for a living might seem like the worst crowd for keeping a secret, but the normally Twitter-happy guests who attended the wedding of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie and consultant Michael Feldman somehow managed to keep the lid on the happy couple’s news.
Attendees tell us that the “embargo” that Guthrie, 42, and Feldman, 45, put on their post-ceremony announcement — that Guthrie was four months pregnant — became a joke among the intimate group of guests, who included Guthrie’s co-hosts Al Roker, Matt Lauer, Hoda Kotb and Willie Geist, as well as Feldman’s partners at the Glover Park Group, former Gore strategist Carter Eskew and former Clinton spokesman Joe Lockhart.
“It was a fun challenge to see if we collectively could pull it off,” NBC’s Chuck Todd tells us in an e-mail. “NOBODY wanted to be the one to blow their cover. Mike has friends in high places, including the CIA!”
Despite the giggling about leaks, the news blackout held until Monday morning, where Guthrie broke the news on-air. Seems only fitting — she also announced the couple’s engagement in May during a “Today” segment.
Once the word was out, the tweets began flowing, of course.
We’re told the wedding near the bride’s hometown of Tucson, Ariz., was lovely, with a mariachi band –in addition to the happy news — lending a festive feel. “I haven’t been this excited for a marriage and pregnancy that didn’t involve me or my wife,” Todd said.
The couple, who are hoping to sneak a honeymoon into their tight schedules sometime in May, is based in New York, with Feldman commuting regularly to Washington for business. The baby, due in late August, will be the first for both.
